Terme Merano
Luminous staging
The highly innovative and artistically designed Terme Merano features a 7,650 m² indoor spa landscape. Eighteen years after its opening, the Terme decided to modernise the original lighting installation by the renowned South Tyrolean-based architect Matteo Thun. This modernisation called for an innovative lighting concept combining design, technology and sustainability in an impactful way. At the same time, the atmospheric ambience of the thermal baths needed to be perfectly complemented.
Defining design element
A customised sculptural lighting installation has succeeded in making the lighting the centrepiece of the spa. Our lighting experts developed 376 dimmable, transparent LED cylinders, which are aligned to form three dynamic waves – a symbol of the connection between water, air and energy. The result is a seamless, floating light effect that enhances the spatial atmosphere and defines the character of the room.
This distinctive solution emerged from intensive development in lighting design and project management – conceived and executed entirely in-house. One particular challenge was to ensure that the lighting system was chlorine-resistant. A prototype was developed in collaboration with the special solutions team and successfully tested on site, ensuring the technical feasibility and durability of the installation.

Aesthetic movement of light
The new installation not only gives the indoor pool space a special atmosphere, it also creates variable lighting moods thanks to state-of-the-art LED technology and the RGB-W function – from energising daylight to soft evening tones. The harmonious programming provides a unique aesthetic. This means that not only does the colour of the light in the sculpture change at dusk or in the evening, but the appearance of the waves also changes constantly. Sophisticated technology means that the lighting creates an unmistakably harmonious atmosphere for special occasions and attracts attention with its vibrant appearance.
Sustainable lighting with energy savings of around 88%
With its lighting redesign, Terme Merano is setting a visible example of sustainability. Energy consumption has been reduced by 87.5% compared to the previous halogen solution, while the lighting intensity has more than quadrupled and the feel-good factor for guests has noticeably increased. In figures: At around 4.2 kW per hour, the light sculpture requires about as much power as a standard coffee machine.
As of 2023, the thermal baths were the first facility of its kind in the world to be EarthCheck-certified. Sustainability guides all new investments and together with its partners, Terme is shaping a greener future. In 2025, it was once again awarded the coveted silver certification from EarthCheck – a clear sign that sustainable thinking and action are an integral part of its corporate philosophy. This year, Terme Merano will consistently continue on its sustainable path – with the clear goal of taking on a pioneering role in South Tyrolean tourism and combining ecological responsibility with a high-quality guest experience.
"This project exemplifies our commitment to seamlessly combining comfort, atmosphere, and sustainability in a contemporary way."
