The cycle begins with the very first decision
We are committed to a future in which resources and energy are used responsibly and value is preserved for the long term. Which is why we take a holistic view of our products’ entire life cycle and consistently develop the entire technical cycle right from the outset. From the initial concept to development, production and usage, right through to recycling, every decision influences the next. This is how we lay the foundations for sustainable, future-proof lighting solutions and a well-functioning circular economy.
“Our product innovations are designed to provide the best lighting solutions for every application, with optimised energy efficiency and durability.”
Christian Kügerl, Head of Product Development
The start of the process makes all the difference
Design
It all begins with the design. Our Sustainable Design Guidelines form an integral part of every development process and set out clear principles for our products, which we design to be modular and easily separable, laying the foundations for repairs, upgrades and a long service life right from the start.
Adaptable for the future
Novu Campus, Zurich, Switzerland
The Circle is a multifunctional campus for work, dining and leisure, and sets new standards in sustainability As Switzerland’s largest Minergie building, it has been awarded LEED Platinum certification. The wide variety of uses also places particular demands on the lighting design, which needs to be able to respond flexibly to changes. MOVE IT PRO 45 can be adapted to changes in room layout without the need for structural alterations and is easy to maintain. This keeps the system in use for longer, reduces material costs and conserves resources.
Every resource counts
Production
We use our resources wisely. Modern processes combine precise, robot-assisted manufacturing with energy-efficient warehousing processes. This is how we make targeted use of energy and materials and organise our production operations in a way that conserves resources – without compromising on quality or durability.
92.2 quadrillion possibilities. Precision-engineered.
Aertssen Group, Beveren, Belgium
UNICO’s robot-assisted assembly ensures precise manufacturing, reduces errors and avoids unnecessary use of resources. The freely combinable optics mean that a luminaire can be adapted to meet a range of requirements – from downlights to wallwashers. This has allowed UNICO to be used in a variety of ways throughout the entire building without the need for different luminaires for each application – saving even more resources as a result.
Efficiency that works
Usage
Around 90% of the emissions generated over the life cycle of a luminaire are produced during the usage phase – and this is precisely where we can make the biggest difference. With high luminous efficacy and smart sensor technology, we provide lighting whilst minimising energy consumption, improving the overall energy balance over many years. At the same time, we want to keep our lights in working order for as long as possible and avoid having to replace them ahead of schedule. To achieve this, we use high-quality materials, timeless design and LEDs with a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours, while also ensuring that spare parts remain available for the long term.
More light. Less energy.
SWICA Head Office, Winterthur, Switzerland
The SWICA Head Office in Winterthur is a modern workplace for around 700 employees. Its architecturally integrated lighting combines high efficiency with intelligent control: profile luminaires with up to 122 lm/W, together with presence and motion sensors, ensure that light is only used where and when it is needed. The result is a lighting concept that brings together thoughtful architecture and energy efficiency.
Change resulting in continued use
Modernisation
We believe that reusing existing items rather than replacing them is a key part of sustainable product design. The modular design of our luminaires makes maintenance, repairs and modernisation straightforward and allows individual components to be replaced as required. This means that existing solutions can be adapted to new requirements through lighting refurbishments or efficiency upgrades.
A new approach to existing lighting
Technische Univerisität Darmstadt, Germany
At TU Darmstadt, around 1,500 existing MINO 60 luminaires fitted with T5 bulbs, dating from 2012, were upgraded to the latest technical standards using custom-made LED conversion kits. The LED module we have developed allows for a 1:1 replacement without the need for major alterations to the existing installation – it is resource-saving, efficient and cost-effective. At the same time, LED technology reduces energy consumption and improves the lighting quality. The new lighting system can be flexibly programmed and adapted to different requirements and brightness levels.
The end is a new beginning
Recycling
Materials are valuable resources that should be used for as long as possible and kept in circulation. Thanks to the consistent focus of our products on dismantling and sorting by material type, the materials used can be efficiently separated at the end of their service life and fed into the relevant recovery and recycling processes.
Sustainable office lighting
XALec, Graz, Austria
Minimalist, yet anything but unremarkable: ENVIVA impresses with a height of just 15 mm, direct and indirect lighting, and glare-free task lighting. Thanks to the wide range of options available, it can be flexibly adapted to suit different rooms and requirements – suspended, built-in, attached, free-standing or integrated into a track. The raw aluminium surface gives it character and a lively feel. Thanks to its high energy efficiency, ENVIVA reduces energy consumption, costs and CO₂ emissions. After use, the individual components can be easily separated and fed into their respective material recycling streams. ENVIVA meets all the requirements for flexible and sustainable lighting in modern working environments.
