House of Schools

Communicative learning landscape

The House of Schools is an architectural highlight that forms part of the expansion of the Business School Campus at Johannes Kepler University Linz. The focal point of the building is the atrium. A room flooded with daylight that facilitates both communication and access. To complement this, a finely tuned lighting concept ensures that the artificial light is perceived as natural and harmonious at any time of day and whatever the weather, emphasising the open, inspiring architecture of the building.

A vibrant place to work and learn

The House of Schools is a five-storey building consisting of offices, meeting spaces and seminar rooms. The reinforced concrete load-bearing structure with a 10x10 m column grid allows flexible room layouts – from individual offices to seminar rooms for 50 people. The atrium connecting them creates space for formal and informal meetings. Kitchenettes and meeting islands on each floor encourage dialogue and interaction. The open-plan ground floor serves as a connecting element between the functional spaces and expands the possibilities for use of the building.

A cross-floor concept

To achieve a lively atmosphere, all installations were made visible, which required precise coordination of all trades. As the access areas in the atrium differ from floor to floor in terms of their position and design, there was a lack of ceiling space for the installation of lighting fixtures in some areas. This meant that the lighting had to ensure uniform illumination across several levels in some areas – a challenge that required careful lighting planning across all floors.

A single solution for every space

To ensure consistent lighting quality, the efficient MOVE IT PRO system was chosen as a flexible yet elegant solution that is unobtrusive in its design and technically versatile. The track series enables a uniform appearance throughout the building while also satisfying the different requirements in the individual spaces. In addition to the linear BETO lighting fixtures, which support both focused work and inspiring conversations with glare-free light, the system also integrates decorative pendant lights, escape route and emergency lighting, and motion detectors. BETO is also used independently of the track system – such as in the stairs or the seminar rooms. The lighting fixture ensures standard-compliant lighting and is defined by its outstanding efficiency.

“The completion of the building has created a communicative learning environment where users feel comfortable and students are encouraged to learn.”

In the spotlight

The lighting atmosphere grounded in nature is particularly fascinating, as it is a powerful source of inspiration thanks to its diversity and uniqueness. It not only influences our creative work, but also our thought processes by opening up new perspectives and creating emotional resonance.
