Light in dialogue with sound, architecture and nature

Klanglicht 2026

The theme of time

KLANGLICHT explores the theme of time against the magnificent backdrop of Eggenberg Palace in Graz, bringing historic architecture into dialogue with contemporary art. This extraordinary setting provides the starting point for an artistic exploration of time, history, order and transformation. Light and sound reveal hidden connections and offer new perspectives on the palace’s spaces.

From 23 October to 7 November 2026, XAL is part of KLANGLICHT, presenting FRACTAL CODE as one of the 16 installations featured in this year’s festival.

Programm

Immersive experience

FRACTAL CODE transforms the space into an immersive interplay of light, shadow and sound. The delicate perforations of the mirrored cube break the light into the finest fragments, allowing the fractal patterns to appear to float weightlessly in space. The material shell visually dissolves, giving way to an atmosphere of lightness and transparency. Light and sound merge into a unified composition: fractal structures become not only visible, but audible. The fractal pattern was developed through a transdisciplinary collaboration with product design studio 13&9 Design and Prof. Richard Taylor (University of Oregon / Fractals Research). Certain fractal structures have been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system and to reduce stress. For FRACTAL CODE, this principle was explored through sound: the specially composed Fractal Compositions No. 1 translates repetition, self-similarity and controlled variation into a multilayered soundscape. Sound designer Severin Su reinterpreted the Fractal Sound for the space, making it an integral part of the immersive experience for visitors.

"As an innovative lighting manufacturer, we are passionate about those moments when light transforms our perception, creates inspiring atmospheres and enhances well-being."

As a festival sponsor, we also support the façade projection by German media artist Daniel Rossa at Eggenberg Palace. Through light, colour and movement, the projection creates an image that neither stages nor creates an illusion of the historic setting, but instead reveals it in a new light, offering a fresh perspective on the site and its history.
