Blique by Nobis

Design hotel in a converted warehouse

The Blique by Nobis Hotel is in Stockholm's gallery district on the northernmost tip of the city. The hotel is in a converted 1930s warehouse designed by the renowned architect Sigurd Lewerentz. The Nobis Group decided to work with architect Gert Wingårdh and team to redesign the listed building and create a contemporary hotel inspired by its neighbours in the city's gallery district.

Contemporary meeting place

Lovers of architecture, design, art, music, and good food will find what they are looking for in the public areas of the hotel. The architects fitted the austere interior – raw concrete with massive columns and exposed metal pipes – with timeless Scandinavian furniture, modern sculptures, and contemporary works of art.

Preserving identity with light

The main objective while developing the lighting concept was to optimally complement the project and clarify the basic idea of the building. This means updating functions without losing the fundamental aesthetics and style with the preserved exposed concrete and its modernist simplicity.

Lighting as an architectural component

The architects point to the ceiling height and the number of technical installations and concrete columns as a particular challenge, not least given the complex connections and set-up. "By designing the general lighting as an architectural component, a narrow and open grid, we could cover many of the numerous technical installations in the ceiling," explained Wingårdhs architect Helena Toresson.

Intelligent lighting control

Another critical question was how to optimally use the luminaires to make the room cosy and varied, despite the vast open spaces and hard surfaces. The solution was intelligent lighting control. The various areas were divided into zones and groups for control purposes. A total of 1600 DALI addresses were included in the control protocol. An astronomical clock has been programmed for selected zones. As can be seen in the picture gallery, the seasonal position of the sun could be taken into account and the lighting mood in the lobby adjusted accordingly.

Cooperation at the highest level

The quality and flexibility of the general lighting were essential as there was little daylight in the lobby. The hotel is also an art gallery. This highly complex public space coupled with the requirements for intelligent lighting control necessitated cooperation with a lighting designer and an innovative premium manufacturer. XAL's in-house lighting designer offered all this.

“We were looking for a high-quality product with a lot of flexibility for the public areas of the hotel. We wanted to create something that fit perfectly into the room and conveyed high technical quality with its pure aesthetics."

Kajsa Johanson, Wingårdhs architect

The optimal solution

These requirements were fully met by MOVE IT 25's high-quality insets (opal, spots, linear, wallwasher), the NODE connector and the TULA pendant luminaires. Tunable White and Colour Warm Dimming variants were both used to variably adjust the colour temperature (warmer light in the morning and cooler in the evening).
