MAM Competence Center

Babies are round, not square

As a company, MAM is like a growing organism. This means, the new research and development centre will also have the ability to grow over the years and offer a sustainable and expandable working environment for up to 180 employees. The Innocad concept responds to this complex task of organic growth using the principle of cell division. Three circular, interlocking structures are connected to one another like bubbles, or abstract cells, and gently blend into the hilly landscape.

The human being in the centre

One of the unique features of this project was the opportunity to apply unified, cross-disciplinary knowledge and a holistic, people-focused approach. From first conception, an analysis was made of the challenges of everyday work, focusing on people with their psychological, physiological, cognitive and social needs. The workplace is also the living space in which an adult spends most of his waking hours. This knowledge flowed into the design to allow every employee, no matter where they are in the building, to have the same spatial quality.

Biophilic design for more well-being

The qualitative interior concept follows the design guidelines for biophilic design*, which, among other things, deals with questions of a pleasant design language, the use of natural materials and the creation of sensual stimuli, including variable lighting and acoustics. An example of this is the fractal pattern of the carpet, which triggers stress-reducing mechanisms when viewed. All in all, an authentic, natural atmosphere is created that reflects the processes of nature. This is supported by the use of dynamic and diffuse light from natural and artificial sources.

Light and acoustics in combination

The lighting design for the work area was a central concern of the architects. Linear workplace lights underline the radial design language of the acoustic ceiling. The communication areas are selectively illuminated by recessed SASSO downlights. An acoustic-light combination was used in the meeting areas to create optimum conditions for communication and concentrated work. Outdoor lights have been used in the atrium and on the rooftop terrace to ensure a smooth transition from inside to outside.

"The result is an organic, growing building in which the respective parts of the building flow seamlessly into one another. Each part works on its own, but benefits from the others."

Flashlight

Light is our favourite medium, as without it perception of the material nature of objects is not possible. It allows a room to have many different facets. Architecture can only be experienced through the effect of light: it makes it plastic, structures it and gives it an atmospheric charge.
