Therme Merano

Aesthetics, functionality and sustainability in harmony

The highly innovative and artistically designed Therme Merano building offers a 7,650 m² indoor spa landscape. Eighteen years after its opening, the spa decided to modernize the original lighting installation by renowned South Tyrolean architect Matteo Thun. At the heart of the renovation is a custom-made, sculptural lighting installation. Our lighting experts developed 376 dimmable, transparent LED cylinders that mimic three dynamic waves and symbolize the elements of water, air, and energy. The new installation not only gives the bathing hall a special aesthetic, but also creates flexible lighting moods thanks to the RGB-W function – from invigorating daylight to soft evening tones. At the same time, the implemented solution also meets sustainability requirements: energy consumption has been significantly reduced, while the feel-good factor for guests has increased noticeably.

MOL Campus

Lighthouse project

The striking design by Foster & Partners for the MOL corporate headquarters in Budapest comprises a 28-story high-rise building with a five-story podium, both structures merging seamlessly through an elegantly curved line. The center of the podium extends into an impressive atrium that serves as the heart of the building. Foster & Partners wanted an LED line along each Sky Garden that follows the organic curves. This should not only have a design effect, but also be suitable as workplace lighting, with a UGR value below 19 and a microprismatic cover. In addition, the installation depth must not exceed 6 cm. In collaboration with Licht Kunst Licht AG, a customized luminaire was created that meets all requirements, based on the MINO CURVE.

Palais Schwarzenbergplatz

Customized system solution

For the Palais Schwarzenbergplatz, we developed a special construction for the state hall, with a ceiling that allowed only four mounting points due to its preservation status. Based on a bespoke MINO 60 profile luminaire, we created a special solution with direct and indirect light distribution. Custom JUST spotlights and UNICO downlights were integrated into the track. The entire system shines in a special gold that perfectly matches the neo-baroque decor. It extends over a length of around eleven meters and a width of five meters. The construction was attached using cable-stayed suspension fittings and hung exclusively from the four specified mounting points – in line with the requirements of the building preservation order.

The Hive

23 rings in a row

The building "The Hive" is a landmark of Geneva. A spiral staircase, with steps that are in dialogue with the steel railing, traverses the six floors of different heights. Together with the architects CCHE, we combined expertise in creativity, technology, and logistics to create a suspension of ring luminaires in the central staircase with a height of 24 meters. A group of 23 INO Circle luminaires was attached to a large central canopy thanks to a customized system of 92 cables. The entire structure is surrounded by a glass construct that lends lightness to this masterful piece.

Oberpollinger

Golden luminaires for a dazzling department store

For the conversion of the exclusive Oberpollinger department store in Munich, XAL developed a unique golden tone for both the BO 55 spotlights and the bespoke round track profiles. After a lot of trial-and-error, the custom lacquer tone met the requirements of the architects and clients. A powder coating was deliberately avoided for this exclusive retail experience. The high-quality result is a mixture of hard and soft gold tones with a fine structure, which is still unavailable on the market. Internally, the color is known as "Oberpollinger Gold". Thanks to the innovative lighting concept, customers experience a unique and exclusive shopping experience.

Grazer Dom

Custom-made for sacred building

The challenge was to incorporate modern LED lighting in the cathedral that, at first glance, is invisible, but still contemporary and intelligently controllable. This was made possible by an innovative custom solution by XAL’s Lighting Designers and Smart Services Team. Two types of luminaires were custom-made. Cylindrical pendant luminaires were developed for the cathedral's central nave. A suspended, ring-shaped track system with a considerable diameter of five meters was designed for the side aisles. Technologically, the lighting solutions are characterized by direct and indirect components that make it possible to create the desired lighting moods for the various liturgical celebrations. For this purpose, a wide variety of lighting situations were programmed and can be operated easily. A total of 600 DALI addresses have been created for the control of the programmed scenarios. Programming and remote maintenance was conducted as a comprehensive service by XAL.

Health-Care

The chemistry of light

Hexagonal centerpiece: The interior design concept for the healthcare company MSD uses narrow lines and the hexagonal shape of chemical compounds. Light and luminaires should convey this vision. For this, we adapted our only 4cm narrow MINO 40 system according to the architects’ concepts. Specially manufactured bespoke profiles made the hexagonal arrangement of the filaments possible.

OTTO headquarters

Harmony of contrasts

Smashing boundaries also means combining light and shade. The lighting in the open space of the OTTO headquarters was intended to accentuate its expansive architecture, inter alia through its design lighting. XAL created a custom-made dual solution, which is also a recessed and surface-mounted luminaire. Thus, the realisation of a shadow gap succeeded, together with a profile embedded in the ceiling.
