The Mittnachtbau on Stuttgart’s Königstrasse is one of the city’s most prestigious addresses. This landmark building, distinguished by its striking travertine façade, embodies timeless architectural elegance. Equally integral to its identity is the more than 200-year legacy of Kutter, one of Germany’s most renowned jewelry retailers. With great respect for the building’s historic character and the exclusive product portfolio, Karolina Ćurić Architekten has reimagined the Jeweler Kutter x Patek Philippe Boutique. Their design concept combines refined materials with contemporary retail lighting to create a cohesive and sophisticated environment, placing equal emphasis on the customer experience and the overall spatial atmosphere.

The vision was to create a destination that brings together the rich history and heritage of the family business with a contemporary yet timeless design. At its heart is the close relationship between master craftsmanship and the experience of discovering exceptional timepieces. An open, transparent layout fosters a welcoming atmosphere, inviting meaningful personal interactions and creating an elevated retail experience.
Where lighting design meets craftsmanship
The design intentionally moves beyond the traditional jewelry store layout, where customers are often seated in the center of the showroom with their backs to the entrance. Instead, it creates an inviting, open, and welcoming environment. Thoughtfully integrated alcoves and private consultation areas provide discretion without compromising the openness of the space. The result is a harmonious balance between customer comfort and an immersive brand experience, offering inspiring insights into the world of fine craftsmanship.
Lighting as a guide, materials in dialogue
A custom oak mosaic parquet floor, complemented by freestanding travertine steles, intuitively guides visitors through the boutique. SPIO’s precise light control reinforces this circulation while creating an atmospheric ambiance reminiscent of a star-filled sky. With its minimalist design, the luminaires elegantly highlight the jewelry and timepieces without drawing attention to themselves. The light-toned flooring and clay-plaster walls form a warm counterpoint to the rich walnut surfaces, resulting in an inviting, sophisticated interior. The lighting concept further enhances this interplay, emphasizing the premium quality and tactile richness of the materials. The thoughtful use of natural, sustainably sourced materials—including wood, natural stone, and clay plaster—is central to the design, reinforcing the handcrafted character of both the space and the exceptional pieces on display.
